Helping a Cal Women's Basketball Player Secure a Transfer Through a Custom Highlight Reel

Background / Problem

At the University of California, Berkeley Women's Basketball program, one of our players sought to transfer schools to find more playing time and continue her collegiate career. However, she had limited in-game film available, averaging 3.3 min during the season, making it difficult to showcase her skills to prospective programs.

Objective

Create a comprehensive highlight tape using practice footage to effectively showcase the player's talent, work ethic, and potential, with the goal of helping her attract offers from other programs.

My Role

  • Analyzed practice film archives to find relevant clips.

  • Selected footage demonstrating game-relevant skills (shooting, ball-handling, defense, IQ plays, athleticism).

  • Edited and organized clips into a professional highlight reel.

  • Applied clean, subtle effects (titles, slow-mo, transitions) to enhance clarity while keeping the tape authentic.

  • Worked with coaches to ensure the highlight tape aligned with the player's strengths and role projection at other schools.

Tools and Skills Used

Software: Sportscode, Hudl, Adobe Premiere Pro

Skills:

  • Film analysis and breakdown

  • Video editing and storytelling

  • Attention to detail

  • Collaboration with coaching staff

Outcome

The player successfully transferred to Pepperdine University, continuing her collegiate career at a Division I program. The highlight reel I created played a key role in her recruitment by showcasing her skills in a way that traditional game film could not.
